Sort Text with a Header Row

Summary: Prevent a header row from getting sorted inside a list of text in a Word 2003 document.

When sorting text in a Word 2003 document, there may be circumstances where you wish a header, or description, row not to be sorted along with the text.

For example, assuming you type in the following list of names:

Names
Cathy
Samantha
Billy
Drew
Rolinda

If you perform a normal sort without changing any of the sort options, you would get this:

Billy
Cathy
Drew
Names
Rolinda
Samantha

In actuality, what you want is this:

Names
Billy
Cathy
Drew
Rolinda
Samantha

1. Highlight the text you want to sort.

2. Select “Table” – “Sort”.

3. When the “Sort Text” dialog box appears, underneath “My list has”, click the “Header row” radio button.

4. Choose other sort options as desired, then click “OK” to close the dialog box and perform the sort.
