Microsoft Word 2003 Compatibility and Other Word Processors

Microsoft Word is not Properly Converting Word Processing Documents

Summary: Help Microsoft Word 2003 correctly convert documents from other word processing formats.

Microsoft Word 2003 supports a variety of document types depending on which file converters you have installed, including those written with WordPerfect and Microsoft Works. When you open a file that is not a Microsoft Word file, it may automatically try to load the correct converter without prompting you. If you find that Microsoft Word is incorrectly converting these documents, you can force it instead to prompt you for which converter to use.

1. Click "Tools", selecting "Options".

2. When the "Options" multi-tabbed dialog box appears, select "General".

3. Check "Confirm conversion at Open".

4. Click "OK" to close the dialog box.
