If you are having constant problems with Word 2003, you may want to try the built-in repair functionality that can fix shortcuts, reset settings to their defaults, and more.
1. Click "Help" - "Detect and Repair".
2. Read the dialog box text. This feature will try to automatically find and fix errors in all Office files.
3. If desired, check "Restore my shortcuts while repairing" and/or "Discard my customized settings and restore default settings".
4. Click "Cancel" to skip the repair process or "Start" to enable automatic repairing.
