Normally when you add numbered lists to a Microsoft Word 2003 document the lists look like so:
1. item 1
2. item 2
3. item 3
However, by selecting "Format" - "Bullets and Numbering" inside a list and clicking the "Numbered" tab, other styles are available including prefixing list items by letters or Roman Numeral.
Default Word 2003 list numbering options
However, many other list numbering options are available, including:
1st, 2nd, 3rd, ...
One, Two Three, ...
First, Second, Third, ...
01, 02, 03, ..
To use these other list styles:
1. Move your cursor inside the list.
2. Choose "Format" - "Bullets and Numbering".
3. The "Bullets and Numbering" multi-tabbed dialog appears, and the "Numbered" tab should be selected. Click the "Customize" button.
4. A "Customize Numbered List" dialog box appears. Underneath "Number style", click the pull-down and choose your desired number style.
5. Click "OK" on all of the dialog boxes to close them.
Note that while changing the current list's number style, this will also change the list number style presented in one of the gallery slots when you enter the "Bullets and Numbering" dialog box in the future. To clear this formatting from that dialog box, click the "Reset" button.
Press the "print" button on your browser or select "File" - "Print" to print this tip. Then,
